Koh Tao
If Koh Samui is an island completely dedicated to tourism and tourists (Homo turisticus), Koh Tao is completely dedicated to divers (Homo aquaticus).
There are more diving centres per square kilometer in Koh Tao then there are banks in Switzerland.
When you arrive there you can immediately see the difference from mainland Thailand and from Koh Samui; even near the pier the water is so incredibly clear; you just want to jump in.
Prices for dives and diving courses are lower than anywhere else in Thailand, the organization is perfect. It is a real paradise for divers, but it is also a perfect place if you just want to snorkel or relax a bit on the beach.
Given that the island is mostly dedicated to divers, and that divers lead an almost monastic life (moderated drinking, moderated smoking, and good rest), the night life is much quieter than in Koh Samui: less restaurants, less bars, less discos.
The atmosphere is much more relaxed than in Samui: you will not find signs everywhere advertising the best this or the best that.
Prices are high, especially if you buy things in a supermarket. |
